I'm a bit sad about Prince Phillip's death today. Not because I particularly support any sort of monarchy, but because it sort of feels like the first chunk of concrete has maybe fallen out of the dam and pretty soon we'll be faced with none but Charles and Boris to represent the UK.

Okay, that, but mostly because he sort of reminded me of my dashing, grumpy, occasionally jaw-droppingly inappropriate grandfather, who died a few years ago in his 90s. Goodbye, all you That Kind Of Old Dudes.

[yeah that was one of the first things ive woken up to and its been hard to understand why i feel how i feel today. but certainly pessimism about the future of who will represent the uk politically (etc) can be stirred up easily by change of any sort. whether the visual imagery is a dam, or a house of cards, or whatevs ]

Do you know, this inattentive American had no idea the Queen was married? I thought she'd been a widow for a long time before this. Still, even if I was late to the party, it was still a moment of note.

It must just be the UK news where he would regularly crop up as having mildly insulted a journalist or said something truly horrifying to a non-white person.

I genuinely have trouble parsing out how he was supposedly also the one in the family who kept their PR on the rails, embracing new technology and mindsets, for 70 years - and was good at it? Head-scratcher.

I didn't find myself particularly affected by him dying, even though I actually had the chance to see him and the Queen when they visited York a few years ago. (She looked so tired and bored, and he was waving super enthusiastically.) That said, it's a stark reminder that Liz won't live forever and that will probably hit me like a ton of bricks, because she's just... always been there. The idea of nowt but Charles (I don't have much confidence in the durability of Tory leaders) is grim :/

Exactly! Nothing against Charles as a human being in a lifelong situation he had no choice in, but boy I don't want him on that kind of platform.

Agreed about the queen - I think I'll feel sad when she goes. She's always been here. And we need women in sensible suits, clutching blocky purses and wishing they were off tending to animals instead, in any sort of power.
