I think I’ve mentioned my friend who has discovered that he maybe likes music sometimes at the ripe old age of 42. And that he has the 9-year-old baby bat daughter who is currently floating that she "might like to dye her hair black" at some point (she’s a ranga so . . . cross that bridge when we get to it).

Anyway. So last night Friend is like, "I listened to, like, a hundred and twenty songs from a band I though I might like and I only liked, like, six? Is that normal?"

ME: Yeah. Sometimes it be like that. What band was it?

FRIEND: It was, uh. I think they’re called "Fall Out Boy"?

ME: (totally straight-faced) Uh huh. Well, just as a tip, if you ever want your daughter to start wearing colors again, you should get really, really super into them.

Apparently they had DashCon 2 the other day and, by all accounts, it went well and was a fun celebration of earnest fandom culture from the pre-cringe era?

Proud of how far we’ve come. Single tear, etc.

A quote post on Mastodon v 4.4.1. The key point of the image is that the quoted post only appears as "This post is pending approval from the original author."

Also kinda side-eyeing Mastodon’s implementation of quote posts?

For the record, this is me using Sharkey to reblog a post from WordPress-AP. Whatever you feel about quote posts, neither of those platforms implement permissions for them (at least . . . I think??). So . . . there is literally no way of making this reblog "work" unless both platforms are refactored to support the opinionated way Mastodon has implemented this??

You hear people throw around "Embrace-Extend-Extinguish" a lot on fedi and, well. This is the "Extend" step.

That said, I do think it’s worth remembering that you cannot separate economics and politics. There is no world in which Google flourishes as a monopoly and America flourishes as a political democracy. We must choose. Since the 1970s, we have chosen poorly, and Americans have become more tolerant of authoritarianism in politics, as it just doesn’t seem that different than what they see in commerce. I mean, when I note how petty it is to fire government employees and not even let them collect their desk belongings, one response I hear is a smug variant of “well that’s how it happens in the private sector.” What’s upsetting about this comment isn’t the callousness of it, it is that it’s correct.

Matt Stoller on private authoritarianism.

To give an indication of how prevalent this myth is, I know someone who was literally taught it as part of the MBA they did at Harvard.

For what it’s worth, website owners can already (sort of) see a version of this, because every time a link to your site gets posted to a Mastodon server, it gets hit by the bot that creates the preview cards. This bot clearly identifies which server it originates from in its user agent string. Which is good behavior!

Sending explicit referrers makes this information a bit more visible (and more linked to click-through metrics), but on the privacy angle, it’s not something that was particularly secret before.

BAD MEME, chapter 18.

The title BAD MEME in a bold, brush font, white with a black outline, in front of a roughly painted symbol that looks like an W on top of a vertical line, with two diagonal lines crossing it at roughly the middle. The background is an abstract grunge effect, mostly orange, but with some green and purple at the edges.

Eighteen

Roxanne Lee, more recently known as the Tooth Girl, didn’t know where she was running to. Only what she was running from.

I’m sorry, Roxx. Just trust me, Bri had said. Or, rather, the girl Roxx had always thought of as Brianna Tran had said it. But standing there, in gloom of the church, Roxx had had to admit she wasn’t sure who her friend was. Not any more.

She’d been . . . dulled, somehow, Bri had. Roxx didn’t know how to explain it another way, didn’t yet know how to work the new senses that’d come along with the . . . the thing inside her. The thing she was. Roxx and the Tooth Girl, forever and ever, amen. And things looked so different now, if she only opened her eyes, opened her maw, and sought to taste it. Emotions with flavor, dreams with texture, fears with scents. One new sense exploding across all the others, described and interpreted in the only way Roxx’s still-human brain could comprehend.

For everyone and everything, that was, except for Brianna Tran. Bri had tasted dusty when she’d walked into the church. Thin, somehow. And the people who’d followed her? Well, they didn’t taste like anything at all.

when I was working at my previous job, I had been worried I had lost my work ethic, I didn't like working long hours and I didn't really feel motivated or like I was working that hard.

good news is that I was wrong. I do still have a work ethic and can work hard. bad news is that I'm working very hard.

today is technically my day off, we aren't open, we don't have groups out, we don't have workers so we can really be off work. I sprayed weeds in the blueberries all this morning with the backpack sprayer which is sweaty irritating work. I have to walk up and down each row of blueberries on both sides and carefully spot spray each weed (horsenettles were the big one to hit right now, but milkweed, knotweed, bindweed, ground elder are also big). the perennials are hard to get when we're open for customers because of re-entry intervals, so we're closed tomorrow too.

Then I went down to the creek, took some lunch and sat in the water for an hour. read a book. enjoyed the cool

We got a lot of stuff done this past week and had an enjoyable family party where I stayed up until midnight around the campfire chatting with my cousin, my gay cousin, gousin who is a delight and also a soil scientist. good stuff. also got some vegetables planted in extra plastic we laid for squash, so I'm pleased I'll have some stuff. I will plant some more things since there's still another 100 feet open.

I'm spending this afternoon goofing off and doing fun stuff, then groceries first thing tomorrow then back to work work. Thursday night, I have dinner planned with a friend.

Before we get wildly busy with fall stuff, I want to take a trip away, maybe late august when everyone will be getting back to school. I'm thinking somewhere cooler, like the adirondacks or maine or something. maybe see if my sister wants to come along. This needs to be planned between my parents hopefully going somewhere and the open house they're going to have with the event business. As I checked my calendar, it looks like there's an SCA event I wanted to go to late in August, so maybe I'll roll that in somehow. Might be the wrong direction but worth a look.

Cleaning up my blog and re-rediscovering this old post, because lol.

From memory, these are from Aurelio Voltaire’s What Is Goth?, but I think what’s most interesting looking at these twenty years later is that they represent a variety of goth looks that . . . wouldn’t necessarily read as goth to The Youth nowadays? Hm.

(Something something tradgoth discourse something something???)
