take me home...eventually...

*whispered confession* I haven’t been playing much Fallout 76.
It’s a shame, because there’s a lot I’ve really liked about it, but there’s too many small things that’ve kept it from grabbing me. A lot of it is just the inability to pause the game, when I’m used to single-person games, and there’s so much inventory management and different crafting options (which I like!), and our tiny flat is full of humans who need my attention every fifteen seconds.
I’m also having the same issue that made me give up on Oblivion. After playing Fallout 3, it felt a bit sad exploring this huge beautiful map and rarely encountering friendly NPCs. Oh, a cave? Kill a bunch of skeletons and carry away loot. A ship? Kill a bunch of pirates and carry away loot. Without the occasional Republic of Dave or friendly cave cannibal surprising me out in the wild, I lost the drive to wander. In 76, there’s a lot of very cool new enemies, but without talking to anyone in-game to contextualise them, it’s sort of hard to keep killing. I’m the ignorant jamoke blundering into their home, after all.
Still. Staggered into the Order of Mysteries quest, which made me very happy (even if I seem to have a bug, or lack of comprehension, preventing me from progressing). I do understand that many players are upset at...
…Kent Connolly acting out the “obsessive fan crying out for William Shatner to tell off” role, but separate from that I am just so happy that a character, who previously only existed as a “face for radio” joke, went on to use her dramatic and martial arts skills to found a hugely successful organisation that trained young women to defend not just themselves but the entire damn Appalachian wasteland. Fuck yeah, Shannon Rivers.
