To give an indication of how prevalent this myth is, I know someone who was literally taught it as part of the MBA they did at Harvard.
For what it’s worth, website owners can already (sort of) see a version of this, because every time a link to your site gets posted to a Mastodon server, it gets hit by the bot that creates the preview cards. This bot clearly identifies which server it originates from in its user agent string. Which is good behavior!
Sending explicit referrers makes this information a bit more visible (and more linked to click-through metrics), but on the privacy angle, it’s not something that was particularly secret before.
The Courier and companions tell scary stories around the campfire; Arcade is there to point out how they couldn't be real.
Entry for 2025 AU Roulette, prompt "Shapeshifters".Roxanne Lee, more recently known as the Tooth Girl, didn’t know where she was running to. Only what she was running from.
I’m sorry, Roxx. Just trust me, Bri had said. Or, rather, the girl Roxx had always thought of as Brianna Tran had said it. But standing there, in gloom of the church, Roxx had had to admit she wasn’t sure who her friend was. Not any more.
She’d been . . . dulled, somehow, Bri had. Roxx didn’t know how to explain it another way, didn’t yet know how to work the new senses that’d come along with the . . . the thing inside her. The thing she was. Roxx and the Tooth Girl, forever and ever, amen. And things looked so different now, if she only opened her eyes, opened her maw, and sought to taste it. Emotions with flavor, dreams with texture, fears with scents. One new sense exploding across all the others, described and interpreted in the only way Roxx’s still-human brain could comprehend.
For everyone and everything, that was, except for Brianna Tran. Bri had tasted dusty when she’d walked into the church. Thin, somehow. And the people who’d followed her? Well, they didn’t taste like anything at all.
A cute little . . .
that makes me vaguely nostalgic for the days when I ran this blog on a CMS I’d written myselfCleaning up my blog and re-rediscovering this old post, because lol.
From memory, these are from Aurelio Voltaire’s What Is Goth?, but I think what’s most interesting looking at these twenty years later is that they represent a variety of goth looks that . . . wouldn’t necessarily read as goth to The Youth nowadays? Hm.
(Something something tradgoth discourse something something???)
Apparently while procrastinating studying for her Korean exam, Mum got super into a cdrama about an esports team, and now she wants to know all about MOBAs. Adorable.
Playing Interdimensional Vending Machine and . . . this is the first thing you give me, game? Really?
Aa-aa-aa-and done!
So I like Hualian better than the main pairings in SVSSS or MDZS (no shade on either, mostly just a personal preference thing), but the story itself I think suffered from being unfocused in places and with, honestly, a pretty disappointing villain reveal.
Still a fun read, and with some parts that will live rent free with me forever.
They turned the water off in the building this morning for maintenance reasons and oh gods I just want to brush my teeeeeeeeeeeeeth . . .
I’ve pretty hard-blocked almost all bots from my sites over the last year or so and, yeah. This is why.
Fuck AI, basically.
Why do we tolerate it? Because if you can’t fight it, you normalize it. That way, you don’t kill yourself from the shame of not fixing it. People much smarter than me have been writing about this for centuries. Artists, real artists, the kind that bleed themselves into their work compulsively, with disastrous consequences to their health and legacy, have only ever had this as their message. We are divided between lions and Cassandras. One side will win. The other side was right.
